?CHIPS OF THE SOCIETIES AND CLUBS LOCATED IN EASTERN CUBA?

The former Oriente province was an area where clubs and societies were abundant. There, games of chance were practiced intensely and with no official prohibition during the republican period. Seemingly protected under an institutional character (they were dully registered in accordance with the legislation in force at the time) and an indifferent policy from the local authorities, they were authorized to operate rooms fitted out with several board games, rather for its members or regular costumers. This is evidenced by the several series of chips clearly identified they issued, many of which have survived to the present day allowing us to make up an interesting set, mostly constituted by very similar pieces in which the following factors stand out allowing us to differentiate them from those of the rest of the country:

  • they were all manufactured by the same workshop (located in Santiago de Cuba according to references), that used a special plastic of several colours.
  • they are made up by two lids or sides that were engraved independently and then strongly glued.
  • they all show the same type of letters and numbers in their inscriptions.
  • they all have the same design showing the name of the centre in the obverse and the value in the reverse.
  • most of them are clearly identified with the names of the centres or those of their owners. Only a few show monograms, logos, or initials.
  • each series has a large group of values, generally low due to the nature of the games based on small bets, because these chips were meant for local costumers, mostly the members of the centres that issued them.

As to how the activity developed in these centres, we can offer very few details due to regulations that banned mentioning games of chance in the media. Therefore, fore the time being we shall only include the stories and characteristics that we have found about a few of them in publications of the time.

Although most of the chips displayed in this page belong to clubs and societies of great renown in Santiago de Cuba (among which the most outstanding are the following four) we will also include interesting chips from other cities of the eastern region like Bayamo, Guantánamo, Manzanillo, Banes, etc., many of which date back to last century’s first decades.

San Carlos Club

One of the institutions closely related to Santiago de Cuba’s social and cultural development during the 19th and 20th Centuries was the San Carlos Club, which occupied the first bench among the most distinguished societies in the former eastern capital.

It was founded on November 6th 1859 by a group of outstanding members of Santiago’s society, mostly French and Cubans, and other valuable members of the Spanish, English, German, and American communities living in the city. It was first named San Carlos Academy as a tribute to the Governor of Oriente at the time, don Carlos de Vargas Machuca y Cervato, and it was set up as a fencing ward, but at the same time it became a gathering centre for Santiago’s high society to enjoy one another’s pleasant and distinguished company. So, a few years later it was renamed San Carlos Club, by approval of a new set of rules on June 18th 1864, being its president at the time don Tomás Rousseau Noblet. The following year, on December 1st, its existence was officially legalized by the Civil Governor don Manuel Pereira y Abascal, Marquee of Concordia.

The club’s headquarters were located at different places in town. First, upstairs a clothes and hat shop at number 1 Santo Tomás street, where it remained until 1864 when it moved to a recently constructed building owned by don Rafael Llópis, at number 7 of the same street, where it also occupied the top floor. There, mayor balls and cultural acts which represented a landmark at that time were celebrated. However, the society’s growth brought about the need for more room, and in 1866 it moved to a house located at number 18 San Juan Nepomuceno street, where its library was open in 1868. Last, it moved to a bigger building at number 1 San Pedro street (today 653 Lacret) rented on August 4th 1870 to the heirs of the widow Marquess of Delicias del Tempú, doña Rosa María Bravo de Portuondo, for 8 ounces a month. Definitely established in this building, it purchased its property in 1882, at a cost of 23 000 pesos, making important refurbishments in 1890 that altered its facades’ appearance. Years later, in 1910, a superb three-story building was erected on the same spot. In 1932, it was reduced to two stories being the third one destroyed by an earthquake that hit the city.

During the independence war, many Cubans conspired in favour of independence in its rooms, which led to provocations and threats from the colonial government. In spite of this, the society never closed its doors, and it was the first building in town to raise the Cuban flag in 1899.

Santiago de Cuba’s Spanish Colony

On August 13th 1899, a group of important Spanish figures living in Santiago de Cuba gathered with the purpose of creating an education and amusement society to promote the relations and social interests of these important progressive social classes. A provisional board of directors was appointed to carry out the preparations required in order to definitely create the society.

This provisional board of directors, the president of which was don José Bosch, organized a general assembly that was celebrated on October 15th 1899. The assembly approved the set of rules that constituted the Centre of the Spanish Colony, and at the same time, elections were called to vote the first board of directors that ruled the society’s work until December 31st 1900.

At the beginning, the society functioned as an education and amusement centre for the city’s most outstanding Spanish social classes. Each associate would pay a monthly fee of one peso to maintain the society. The fee was raised to $1.50 in April 1902.

In 1900, wanting to beneficiate its associates due to the lack of clinics in Santiago de Cuba that could offer proper medical care, the Spanish Colony purchased from the Dependientes del Comercio Charity Centre the land and buildings of their estate, and founded there the Spanish Colony Clinic. The membership fee was then raised again to two pesos, giving the associates right to medical care.

In 1943, Santiago de Cuba’s Spanish Colony had 15 272 associates throughout the eastern province, and an annual budget of 278 678 pesos to run.

The society never neglected cultural relations, organizing lectures and other social acts of different kinds for its associates, as well as artistic events, balls, and official receptions, for the enjoyment of its entire membership.

The Spanish Colony also had a large and well preserved pantheon at the Santa Ifigenia Cementery, and it offered all sorts of services, attentions and considerations deserved by the members of this institution.

“Luz de Oriente” Society

The antecedent of this society was the “Popular Casino”, the first association in Santiago de Cuba grouping coloured members with cultural and recreational purposes. It was created shortly after the Pacto del Zanjón, when slavery had not yet been fully abolished.

Due to several incidents occurred in this Casino, many members ceased to be so, and with the remaining ones the “Casino Santiago” was created as a political society, first with autonomist purposes and later with separatists ones.

On January 6th 1888, several individuals who had been members of both casinos agreed to create a society called “El Progreso” (The Progress), on June 21st that year. On January 29th 1899, it changed its name for that of “José Martí Political Club”.

Shortly after, a dancing club called “Luz de Oriente” (Oriente’s Light) was created, which merged with “José Martí Political Club” on April 29th 1899. It was agreed that both merged societies would thereafter be named “Luz de Oriente” Society.

The society occupied a large building dating back to 1924, located at number 204 Heredia street, worth 40 000 pesos. There were its offices, auditorium, library, sports field, etc. It also published an illustrated magazine that was the society literary and news organ. It was, in addition, lecture hall and platform for Cuban culture and patriotism. In its rooms, many important cultural and political figures gave scientific and literary lectures, and famous artists offered wonderful recitals and painting exhibitions.

General Antonio Maceo visited the club’s rooms and expressed satisfaction to see such progressive social class so united. And Juan Gualberto Gómez wrote in the visitor’s book of the society, “I love you because you are Luz (light) and because you are Oriente”.

The Aponte Club

In 1890, there was in Santiago de Cuba the “Oriente” Education and Amusement Society, the members of which were black people, who conspired against the Spanish colonial government. When the Independence War burst out in 1895, this society closed its doors for most of its members to go fight in the Revolution.

Once the conflict was over, a group of its former members who had fought gathered in order to reopen the social centre and regroup this ethnic group’s most outstanding families. For such purpose, the society was re-established on February 22nd 1900, and during March 4th’s session that year, at the suggestion of Pablo Sánchez Gastón, its members unanimously agreed to change its name for that of “Aponte Club”, as a tribute to José Antonio Aponte, the free black man from Havana who led in 1812 the first uprising against the Spanish colonial regime, with revolts in Puerto Príncipe and Oriente. After being defeated, he and several of his comrades-in-arms were hung to death.

In 1901, the society’s headquarters were at a house located on the corner of Sagarra and Hartman streets, and later, in 1906, they were already established at number 356 Castillo Duany street. Those were its glorious times, for some of the most representative figures of their class in town were among its members. However, later due to the terrible economic situation of that time, the club had to move to an old house on Máximo Gómez steet and the corner of Moncada, which was afterwards purchased by the club with the efforts of its president at that time Pablo Sánchez Gastón in order to build on that plot a modern building that was inaugurated on May 20th 1919. Yet, due to this construction the club contracted debts that weren’t settled, and had to move back to the old premises at number 356 Castillo Duany street.

The Aponte Club reached a significant fame and had several hundreds of associates, maintaining a guiding policy of opening the doors for all former members, especially the youth, and always showing interest for improving all conditions and services offered, in order to make more agreeable the attendance of associates and their families to social and cultural events. In addition, they struggled and managed to, among other benefits, purchase the deeds to its headquarters, remarkably enlarge its library, and broadcast on radio for an hour on Sundays, which constituted the society’s official organ.
